Green Tourism Brochure Promotes Area People, Businesses, History and Natural Beauty New Way of Packaging Region to be Unveiled Saturday, August 20th Montevideo, MNThere is a new trend in the world of travel called "Nature and Culture Tourism" and business owners and non-profit organizations in the Upper Minnesota River Watershed surrounding Montevideo have developed a new brochure to capitalize on it. The "Green Routes" Brochure for the Upper Minnesota River Valley is being published and distributed in late August 2005 by Renewing the Countryside -- a Minneapolis based non-profit organization working in partnership with Clean up the River Environment (CURE), the Western Minnesota Prairie Waters Tourism Coalition and the Java River Café. The brochure highlights 22 different "Green" Businesses and Destinations from Granite Falls to Ortonville Minnesota for travelers who want to take time to explore the back roads and learn about the people who live and work in this relatively unknown part of the state. To qualify as a "green business", the operations featured in the brochure had to fill out an application demonstrating how they contribute to the local economy, conserve natural resources, use sustainably produced products and how they engage customers in the nature and culture of the Upper Minnesota River Valley region. Green Routes Brochure applicants were screened by a volunteer committee of local regional tourism practitioners and environmental professionals. The final product will be unveiled in Montevideo on Saturday August 20th as part of Java River's 7th Anniversary Celebration. A tour of selected Green Routes brochure participants will begin at 9 a.m. from Java River in Montevideo and proceed to visit Bergen's Prairie Market in Milan, Quiet Country Living and the Lady Slipper B & B in Benson, Stoney Run Lodge in Odessa and the Earthrise Farm near Madison Minnesota before returning to the Java River Courtyard for an evening of music featuring folk artists and troubadours from throughout Minnesota, including Jerry Rau, Tom Lieberman and Jerry Ostensoe. For more information on the complete itinerary for the event, call CURE (1-877 269-2873). This Green Routes brochure "kick-off weekend" is taking place at the same time as two other regional events of interest: The 25th Annual Minnesota Valley Antique Farm Power and Machinery Association Threshing Show at Heritage Hill along Hwy. 7 in Montevideo (for more information visit: http://www.maxminn.com/heritagehill/showevents.html) and the 67th Annual Cornfest in Ortonville (www.bigstonelake.com) For more information on the Green Routes project call Renewing the Countryside 1.866.378.0587.
